Setting Up Goals and Tracking Progress

How to create financial goals in Luum, link accounts, track your progress toward each goal, and update or close a goal.

Goals let you define a financial target — retirement savings, a home down payment, a child's education — and track how your portfolios are progressing toward it. This guide explains how to create and manage goals.

Goal types

Luum supports five goal categories:

  • Retirement — a target nest egg or monthly income figure you want to reach by a target age or date.
  • Home purchase — a target down payment amount and desired purchase date.
  • Wealth building — a general savings or investment milestone without a specific purpose.
  • Income — a target annual dividend or passive income figure from your portfolio.
  • Education — a target amount for education savings (e.g., for an RESP).

Creating a goal

  1. Click Goals in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Add goal.
  3. Select a goal type, then enter a name, target amount, and target date.
  4. Under Linked accounts, select which portfolios or account types should count toward this goal. For example, a retirement goal might link your RRSP and TFSA only; a home purchase goal might link your FHSA and a taxable savings account.
  5. Click Save goal.

How progress is calculated

Goal progress is the current market value of all linked accounts divided by your target amount, expressed as a percentage:

`Progress = Current value of linked accounts ÷ Target amount × 100`

The progress bar on the Goals page updates automatically as your linked portfolios sync. The projected completion date is based on a linear extrapolation of your current savings rate and does not account for investment returns or market volatility.

Which accounts count toward a goal

Only portfolios you explicitly link are counted. If you hold the same security across multiple portfolios, each linked portfolio's value is included. The demo portfolio is always excluded from goal calculations even if selected — demo balances are synthetic and do not reflect real assets.

Editing a goal

Click the three-dot menu on any goal card to edit the name, target amount, target date, or linked accounts. Changes take effect immediately. Editing a goal does not reset any historical progress data.

Closing a goal

When you reach a goal or decide it is no longer relevant, click Mark as complete or Delete goalfrom the goal's menu. Deleting a goal removes it permanently. Marking it complete archives it — you can view completed goals under the Completed tab on the Goals page.

Gap-to-goal on the dashboard

The main dashboard shows a gap-to-goal card for your primary goal — the difference between your current linked account value and your target. The primary goal is the one you set during onboarding. You can change it in Settings → Goals → Set as primary.
