How AI answers work
How Luum meters AI usage in answers, what each depth of analysis costs, and how the monthly allowance and carry-over work.
AI answers are the currency for Wealth-tier AI features. This article covers how answers are allocated, which features consume them, how carry-over works, and what happens when you run out.
What are AI answers?
AI answers are consumed when you use features powered by Claude AI. They exist to keep the service economically sustainable — AI inference has a real cost per call, and answers let Wealth subscribers use AI features freely without Luum metering every individual token.
Monthly allocation
Wealth subscribers receive 200 AI answers per month. Answers are added to your balance on your billing renewal date. Unused answers carry over to the next month, capped at a maximum balance of about 130 AI answers. Answers do not expire as long as your Wealth subscription is active.

The answer cost is always shown before you confirm an AI action. You will never be charged answers without seeing the cost first.
Answer reservation and refunds
Answers are reserved at the moment you initiate an AI request. If the request fails before any output is produced (a network error or a pre-processing failure), the reserved answers are returned to your balance automatically. If a response has already started streaming, no refund is issued — the inference cost has been incurred.
Purchasing additional answers
If your balance runs low, you can purchase top-up bundles at any time from Settings → Billing → Buy AI Answers:

Top-up answers are added immediately and do not expire as long as your account is active. They are consumed before your monthly allocation.
What happens when you run out
AI features that require answers will be disabled until your balance is restored (either by purchasing a top-up or waiting for your next billing renewal). Non-AI features — your dashboard, portfolio analytics, Ticker Scores, Tax Centre exports — are not affected by answer balance.
Starter and Investor tiers
AI answers are a Wealth-tier feature. Starter and Investor subscribers do not have access to Portfolio Chat, the AI Strategy page, or IPO analysis. During your 30-day free trial you have full Wealth-tier access including the monthly answer allocation.
